Shutterstock contemplates a raise! 1 Year, 6 Months ago Karma: 0
Check this out

Hey guys.. we're crunching the numbers, and will have an answer to you by the end of April on the pay raise.

Shutterstock is a computationally complex model.. And we're running all the numbers now. We should have a good feel for what the $199 price point does to our sales in the next couple of weeks. At that time, we will announce the raise. As you know - we take risk. If somebody comes in and downloads all of the photos allotted to them, we are net negative.

When I started Shutterstock, I made sure we would have the marketing dollars built into the buyer/download equation. This math has gotten a bit more complicated since day 1. We now have enhanced licenses, cd burns, 25 employees, 5500sqft of office space in Manhattan (between our 2 offices), a huge marketing budget, 130 servers, 2 data centers, and 55,000 wonderful photographers.

Remember - nothing out there like Shutterstock exists. When other risk-less models want to raise prices, they can give you a raise right away. We have to model it out - and make sure there is room for everything in the end. Please give us the next couple of weeks to do our job, and we'll be back at the end of April with news.

Thanks again

Anyone have thoughts? I have for a long time thought that $.25 was a little cheap for these guys, but it used to be $.22 so I am hoping for maybe $.30????

Sounds funny to think that $.30 per image is a good deal hock:

My guess is for 30c as well.

It is interesting to note that at 123RF who also ahve sub_script_ion sales, they give you 50% of the sub_script_iong (ie. it is calculated monthly). THey have been paying out 33-35c per DL.

DT is the rip of. THey are paying 25c but their sub_script_ion price is quite expensive (tehy make a profit even if teh buyer DL the max, at SS, they lose money if they DL all the images they can.

However, on DT you make good money on the normal sales. Shutterstock has a per image sale, but I have only had 2 in over a year. Different business models I suppose.
