Microstock agencies have improved the way this is done and the ability of just about anybody (with arms and a camera) to get involved. There are other methods to make money with agencies like 123RF and Shutterstock than selling photography. The second mos popular method would be in selling illustrations and 3D renders. Large agencies like Dreamstime and iStockPhoto accept vector illustrations (.ai and .eps) that can be scaled to any size. Still another method to make money is through referral programs. Webmasters and blogger can increase their earning by spreading the word to designers and other photographers.
